Baltimore Counts! A Children’s Counting & Art Book features work by 25 Baltimore based artists. The book is a fundraiser for OrchKids, an initiative created by Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop.
Baltimore Counts! contains 25 pieces of Baltimore trivia. The 25 artists each created a piece of art to illustrate the trivia. Artists include Maren Hassinger and Melissa Dickenson (2008 Sondheim finalists), Mina Cheon and Jeffrey Kent, all named among Baltimore’s top 10 artists.
The hope of OrchKids is to change disadvantaged students’ lives by introducing them to classical music, and to become a model for similar programs in and beyond Baltimore. “I believe passionately that music has the power to change lives, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra should lead the movement,” says Alsop. “By providing a strong foundation and developing the whole individual, we can position these students for lifelong success – success not limited to music.”
